The music for Something in the City (1994) is jazzy, rhythmic and exuberant.

’It just makes me want to move’ says Alston.  The city of the title is ‘any city, all cities’ and a wide range of cultural flavours are evident in the music, especially in the third piece The Wedding where African, Arab and Indian influences can be heard.  The dance keeps up with the music and tries to match it fairly straightforwardly in the first piece. It’s Been Fun has some fun at the expense of the 1960s and ‘Flower Power’.
